REACH –
Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of CHemicals
REACH aims
to require industry to register all of the chemicals that they have
in use. If you do not register the data, then you cannot legally
use those chemicals. There is a period of pre registration which
you really must take advantage of. This means that you must register
between 1 June 2008 and 1 Dec 2008. This window of opportunity allows
you to then have up to 10 years to comply. The alternative is that
you will have to comply immediately. The difference is startling
– you must act now to prepare. To do nothing is simply not
an option. Remember, no data, no market.
Will your suppliers
register, what happens if they find themselves in the position of
not being able to supply you? ASK! Will you still be able to buy
in the future what you buy today? If you are the only user of a
substance, will the supplier pay for a registration just for you?
There is a
huge task ahead of industry to comply with these very broad requirements.
We have been following the developments and are in a good position
to advise you on REACH compliance. Please do not underestimate this
issue. REACH is not too hard, and it is not too late, but you really
should start planning now.
Industry must
be prepared for change, otherwise there is a strong business risk
to any company that trades within the EU. Please do not get caught
out.
